Pure-tone octave masking in normal-hearing listeners.

چکیده
Octave masking was investigated at four different frequencies (250, 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz) as a function of intensity of the masker and phase of the test signal. Slopes of phase-locked octave masking were found to increase with masking signal frequency, from 0.80 dB/dB at 250 Hz to 3.0 dB/dB at 2000 Hz. The monaural octave-masking phase effect was considerably larger for masking signals at low frequencies than at high frequencies, and the phase effect decreased or disappeared entirely for high-level masking signads. Interpretations are considered which take recent neuroph.ysiolo~ieal and physiological data into account, and which describe the octave-masking phase effects in terms of temporal pattern discrimination. Those interpretations adequately account for the frequency dependencies found in octavemasking phase effects.

Pure-tone octave masking in listeners with sensorineural hearing loss.
Pure-tone octave masking was investigated in 14 listeners with sensorineural hearing loss to examine the hypothesis that the sensorineural ear introduces abnormal harmonic distortion. Thresholds for a test signal at f2, masked by a masking signal at fl, (where fz = 2fl ) were obtained as a function of the level of the fl masker for four different ft frequencies (250, 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz) and...
متن کاملPure tone pitch perception and low-frequency hearing loss.
Pitch perception for pure tones was investigated in a group of listeners with low-frequency sensorineural hearing loss. Pitch judgments from each listener were compared with results from psycho-acoustic tasks which provide information on the "place" of cochlear response. The pitch measures employed were: (1) binaural pure-tone pitch matching in a listener with unilateral hearing loss, (2) octav...
متن کاملDo adaptive frequency response (AFR) hearing aids reduce 'upward spread' of masking?
Speech recognition scores in noise are improved for some subjects who wear hearing aids that reduce low-frequency noise with an adjustable high-pass filter circuit. To evaluate whether these improvements were related to a reduction in upward spread of masking, pure-tone masking patterns for a low-frequency band-pass noise were measured in normal and hearing-impaired subjects. The filter skirt o...
متن کاملPsychoacoustic and phoneme identification measures in cochlear-implant and normal-hearing listeners.
The purpose of this study is to identify precise and repeatable measures for assessing cochlear-implant (CI) hearing. The study presents psychoacoustic and phoneme identification measures in CI and normal-hearing (NH) listeners, with correlations between measures examined. Psychoacoustic measures included pitch discrimination tasks using pure tones, harmonic complexes, and tone pips; intensity ...
متن کاملComparison of air-conduction and bone-conduction hearing thresholds for pure tones and octave-band filtered sound effects.
The purpose of this study was to measure air-conduction (AC) and bone-conduction (BC) hearing thresholds with pure-tone and filtered sound effect stimuli using standard audiometric equipment. A group of 20 young, normal-hearing listeners participated in the study. Pure-tone stimuli were 250, 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz. Sound effect stimuli were 12 natural sounds that were spectrally limited t...
